Dental Crowns Edmonton
Have you ever experienced pain when biting into something? Then you know how easy it can be to damage and even crack your natural teeth. We can make some small repairs with dental bonding, but more serious damage requires a dental crown in order to restore the health of your natural teeth.
Edmonton dentists Dr. Jim Haymour, Dr. Everett Postill, and Dr. George Laschuk are highly skilled at the fabrication and placement of high quality dental crowns in Edmonton and other dental services.
What are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are a protective cover we place over your natural tooth in order to stabilize it and absorb some of the force from chewing. Dental crowns are like a helmet and is sometimes necessary to prevent a dental extraction due to damage. Common types of dental crowns include porcelain crowns, all ceramic, and metal crowns.
How Do You Crack Teeth?
Your teeth are strong and can withstand a lot of wear and tear. After all, your teeth should provide a lifetime of chewing. Occasionally, you may bite into something like an olive and feel pain because of a pit fragment. Most of the time, our teeth can withstand even those unexpected objects while chewing, but sometimes they can crack your tooth.
You may also crack and wear down your teeth because of habits like clenching and grinding. The force from clenching and grinding wears on your teeth day after day. Because of the strength of our jaws, you can cause serious damage.
Deep Decay
If your tooth contains a large amount of dental decay, once we remove it, you may not have enough tooth structure left for a root canal filling to provide sufficient strength. In these cases, dental crowns are your best bet for the longevity of your tooth.
How Do Dental Crowns Work?
In order to make space for your dental crowns, we need to prepare your tooth by removing part of the tooth structure. Your dental crowns will fit directly over your remaining tooth structure. Each dental crown is a custom creation designed just for you. While we arrange for your permanent crown, we will put you in a temporary crown to hold you over.
Once we receive your permanent crown, we will remove the temporary crown and make sure the new one fits perfectly and then we will use specially designed adhesive to attach it over your natural tooth. Your dentist will make any minor adjustments necessary to the dental crowns to ensure a perfect fit with your opposite and adjacent teeth. Those final adjustments ensure your comfort and tooth function.
Why Save Your Tooth?
It may seem easier and less expensive to have your tooth extracted, but keeping your teeth whenever possible is important. When you lose a tooth, you can experience problems such as shifting teeth and bone loss. When your teeth shift, it can affect your bite, causing your teeth to fit together differently and leading to future dental procedures. Bone loss can create an unstable environment for your adjacent teeth, causing a chain reaction of tooth loss.
